Starting Your Dreams Later In Life and Embracing the Detour

Jenee Darden speaking at Creative Mornings I know it's been a while since I've posted anything but that's because of my job. I'm working as a reporter covering Oakland and I host an arts segment on the radio where I get to interview amazing artists from around the Bay Area. Plus I'm publicizing my book  and building my speaking career!  You know what's funny? I thought this would all happen by the time I was 27-30.  Nope. That wasn't God's plan for me. I'm finally beginning to do the things I've wanted to do and I'm almost 40 years old. Some people reading this who are 40 will say 40 is still young. But some younger people reading may think 40 is nearly ancient. But I'm writing this post for those who like me, thought their career and personal dreams would come true much early in life. I'm here to tell you not to give up.  You know, death inspires life. A number of my relatives and friends have passed away, ranging in

Pelosi Power and Health Care Reform

Pelosi And House Leaders Sign Senate Health Reform Bill
President Obama keeps making history and proving me wrong. I never thought in my lifetime I would witness an African American elected president. And I didn't think the Democrats could get a health care reform bill passed. Looks like it took some Pelosi power to get it done. I'm talking about Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. She reportedly worked behind the scenes real hard to make it happen. This woman is not to be underestimated. The passage of this bill means there's a lot of work to be done. With 30+ million people granted access to health care within the next four years, there's the issue of building more hospitals, patients practicing preventive care, medical schools graduating more doctors, taxes and the list goes on. We're living in historic times. On one hand, it seems like we're moving forward. But with SOME teabaggers shouting racial and homophobic obscenities at legislators, I question how far we have moved.

Moving on...Madame Speaker Pelosi has a lot to celebrate. She turns 70 on Friday.

  2. Cocoa Fly, what Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid did was unbelievable. When Scott Brown won Ted Kennedy's seat everyone thought the health care bill was dead in the water. However, Nancy said "we'll get the numbers we need...We'll pass the health care bill." She never wavered, but she stood steadfast, and determined to win health care reform for the American people. Today was a historic day for the American people, and as time passes everyone will be in agreement.
