Starting Your Dreams Later In Life and Embracing the Detour

Jenee Darden speaking at Creative Mornings I know it's been a while since I've posted anything but that's because of my job. I'm working as a reporter covering Oakland and I host an arts segment on the radio where I get to interview amazing artists from around the Bay Area. Plus I'm publicizing my book  and building my speaking career!  You know what's funny? I thought this would all happen by the time I was 27-30.  Nope. That wasn't God's plan for me. I'm finally beginning to do the things I've wanted to do and I'm almost 40 years old. Some people reading this who are 40 will say 40 is still young. But some younger people reading may think 40 is nearly ancient. But I'm writing this post for those who like me, thought their career and personal dreams would come true much early in life. I'm here to tell you not to give up.  You know, death inspires life. A number of my relatives and friends have passed away, ranging in

Way To Go or Way Too Early?
Pres. Obama Awarded Nobel Peace Prize

Pres. Obama definitely can't blow up stuff now. I was surprised, like many of you, by the big news from Norway. Pres. Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. Sometimes it seems like our president gets more love overseas than here in the U.S. People are either thinking "Way to go Mr. Prez" or "Way too early Mr. Prez." Usually presidents are awarded the prize after their time in office. Maybe the Norwegian Nobel Committee is happy Pres. O hasn't started any wars early in his term like his predecessor Pres. Chaney, I mean...you know what I mean.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said in a released statement:
"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts."

Okay, true, true. Still, that's a lot of pressure on Pres. Obama especially as he ponders over how to handle the war in Afghanistan. I think this a great honor, but the timing of this award is too early. No, I didn't put any Haterade in my tea this morning. The president hasn't been in office long enough to have earned it. That is not to say he isn't working hard and won't prove he deserves it at the the end of his presidency. On the other hand, maybe the world is beginning to love the U.S. again. Rush and Glenn Beck must be elated because this gives them something else to complain about.

What do you think about the president's win? Too early or right on time?

  1. I agree. It's WAY too early. The man hasn't been in office a year and honestly he doesn't have any specific significant accomplishments yet. I believe he will but give him time. Besides, I don't know if an acting President of the US really wants to win the Nobel Peace Prize. One of his primary duties is that of Commander in Chief of the US military. The two don't necessarily go hand-in-hand. I just think it's hilarious that Republicans are upset that our president is popular overseas. Is that a bad thing?

  2. Good point about him Commander-In-Chief. Why are conservatives mad b/c Obama is loved overseas?

  3. Definitely too early. Not that I think that Obama doesn't have the potential to do great things, but he hasn't even been in office 9 months yet. That's not nearly enough to prove himself or to support him wining the Nobel Peace Prize. I think he could do some great things in the future that will warrant such an award, but it's definitely too soon. I will give him credit for being pretty humble about it and saying that he didn't feel like he deserved to be in the company of previous Nobel Peace Prize winners. Sadly, I'm sure folks who already dislike/hate Obama are just going to use this as further fuel to their Haterade mixture.

  4. @Black Chick--I agree and I also give him props for being humble about it.Chris Rock said on Oprah our last president was seen as a "War President" and Obama is a "Peace President." But with Iran, N. Korea and Afghanistan on his plate will he be able to stay the Peace President?
