Starting Your Dreams Later In Life and Embracing the Detour

Jenee Darden speaking at Creative Mornings I know it's been a while since I've posted anything but that's because of my job. I'm working as a reporter covering Oakland and I host an arts segment on the radio where I get to interview amazing artists from around the Bay Area. Plus I'm publicizing my book  and building my speaking career!  You know what's funny? I thought this would all happen by the time I was 27-30.  Nope. That wasn't God's plan for me. I'm finally beginning to do the things I've wanted to do and I'm almost 40 years old. Some people reading this who are 40 will say 40 is still young. But some younger people reading may think 40 is nearly ancient. But I'm writing this post for those who like me, thought their career and personal dreams would come true much early in life. I'm here to tell you not to give up.  You know, death inspires life. A number of my relatives and friends have passed away, ranging in

Love, Love, Love

I can't believe it's almost Valentine's Day. This year is going by fast. Looking back over the week at the news and my own observations of the world, I can't help but notice how love always appears.

Rihanna and Chris Brown showed us that just because two people act like they're in LOVE, doesn't mean it's really LOVE.

Usher put LOVE before a Grammy party to be by his sick wife in Brazil.

A 27-year-old business man shot and killed himself in his Bentley. Police say he was "distraught over financial stuff." It's sad how some people base their LOVE for life on money and things.

The infamous octuplets mom is getting no LOVE from the public.

Many still LOVE to watch Michelle and Barack Obama act LOVINGLY with each other.

Are people putting the Obamas LOVE on too high of a pedestal?

Rush Limbaugh would've LOVED for the Stimulus Package to fail in the House, but it passed.

Whether you're on the left, right or middle, I'm sure everyone would LOVE to have a fat bailout check in their hands right now.

My heart goes out to the people who lost their LOVED ones in the Buffalo plane crash.

Always appreciate those you LOVE.

I am LOVING "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" crossover shows.

Eartha's Kitt last interview before she died aired on PBS last night. Hearing her story made me LOVE her even more.

Why are people tripping off Halle Berry's comments about being in LOVE with a white man? I think I'll blog about interracial dating next week.

I just saw "Under the Tuscan Sun" for the first time and guess what? That's right, I LOVED it.

I LOVE stories about writers.

I'm LOOOOVING Robin Thicke's new video "Dreamworld."

While in the grocery story at the fried chicken line, this 67-year old black man kept going on about his 50-year-old girlfriend that he clearly adored. He told me she looked younger than 50 and "ain't got a wrinkle on her face." I guess you're never too old find LOVE.

I don't know why strangers LOVE to tell me about their personal lives.

Didn't you LOVE how David Letterman handled Joaquin Phoenix?

I LOVE the rain, but hate how people in LA drive like the roads are dry. Slow down!

Sundays in LA I LOVE. The city is mellow and people are relaxing after partying all weekend.

I'm with Ellen DeGeneres, I LOVE to dance too.

I'd LOVE to live and work in London one day.

Speaking of the U.K., I used to LOVE to watch "Are You Being Served?"

My friends and I still LOVE flirting with cute waiters.

Oooh I wish I had a copy of "LOVE Jones" on DVD.

Remember Nia Long's poem in "LOVE JONES"? It was written by Pinkie Gordon Lane who passed away a few months ago.

...I am remembering water
That glows in the dawn
The motion tumbled in earth
Life hidden in mounds

I am dancing a bright beam of light

I am remembering love.

Enjoy your Valentine's Day.
