Starting Your Dreams Later In Life and Embracing the Detour

Jenee Darden speaking at Creative Mornings I know it's been a while since I've posted anything but that's because of my job. I'm working as a reporter covering Oakland and I host an arts segment on the radio where I get to interview amazing artists from around the Bay Area. Plus I'm publicizing my book  and building my speaking career!  You know what's funny? I thought this would all happen by the time I was 27-30.  Nope. That wasn't God's plan for me. I'm finally beginning to do the things I've wanted to do and I'm almost 40 years old. Some people reading this who are 40 will say 40 is still young. But some younger people reading may think 40 is nearly ancient. But I'm writing this post for those who like me, thought their career and personal dreams would come true much early in life. I'm here to tell you not to give up.  You know, death inspires life. A number of my relatives and friends have passed away, ranging in

MTV VMA 2009
Kanye, MJ Tribute, Lady Gaga

Does Kanye Kick it With Rep. Joe Wilson?
This is the first MTV VMA Awards I've watched in a while. The only reason why I tuned in was to see the MJ Tribute. But the whole tone of the show changed when Kanye ruined Taylor Swifts time to shine. She beat Beyonce in the "Best Female Video" category. Kanye interrupts her acceptance speech, takes the mic and says Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video is one of the greatest of all times. Kanye has done these sort of outbursts at award shows before and it's getting old. This was Swift's first VMA and the girl is only 19. What Kanye did was disrespectful, tacky and uncalled for. I felt so bad for Swift. One day these antics will hurt his career. Swift seems sweet and soft. I'd like to see him pull that on someone like Pink or T.I. Kanye apologized to Swift on his blog. West was reportedly kicked out of Radio City Music Hall. Props to Beyonce for graciously allowing Swift to take the stage and finish her speech after Beyonce's "Single Ladies" won for Video of the Year.

Screaming for MJ Tribute
Michael Jackson would be very proud of his little sister Janet for leading a great tribute. Madonna's appearance in the opening was a nice surprise. Her speech was sharp. She exalted his talent and did not sugar coat MJ's trials. The tribute was also a shot at the media for all of the rumors that have surrounded MJ's life and death. The highlight for me was the"Scream" performance. The MJ/JJ duet is one of my favorite videos. Janet danced the routine from the video on stage while MJ was on screen. When the camera pulled back it looked like MJ and Janet were dancing together again. It was very moving.

Lady Gaga, oh Lady Gaga
And Lady Gaga was, um, you know. Well, she scared Tracy Morgan with her blood shot outfit. But that's why people love and hate Lady Gaga. She switches it up on another level.

Tell me, what did you think of the show? Favorite moments? Least favorite moments?
