Starting Your Dreams Later In Life and Embracing the Detour

Jenee Darden speaking at Creative Mornings I know it's been a while since I've posted anything but that's because of my job. I'm working as a reporter covering Oakland and I host an arts segment on the radio where I get to interview amazing artists from around the Bay Area. Plus I'm publicizing my book  and building my speaking career!  You know what's funny? I thought this would all happen by the time I was 27-30.  Nope. That wasn't God's plan for me. I'm finally beginning to do the things I've wanted to do and I'm almost 40 years old. Some people reading this who are 40 will say 40 is still young. But some younger people reading may think 40 is nearly ancient. But I'm writing this post for those who like me, thought their career and personal dreams would come true much early in life. I'm here to tell you not to give up.  You know, death inspires life. A number of my relatives and friends have passed away, ranging in

Fighting Fibroids with Chinese Herbs and Acupuncture

Remember I told you I gave the presentation of my dreams last year? Well I almost missed out on that dream. A few days before my business trip to Austin, Texas, I was in a lot of pain. So much so I postponed my flight. Initially I thought it was a bladder infection that just wouldn’t heal. Every time I blinked I had to pee and I was really bloated. The antibiotics I took were helping but once I was done with the prescriptions, symptoms flared up.

I went to the OBGYN, had an ultrasound and was told I had fibroids. One decided to grow right by my bladder, which explained the frequent urination.  Thankfully they’re all small, but those little suckers are mighty. They hurt. The doctor gave me a pamphlet with info on surgical options.  Ibuprofen helped ease the pain and frequent urination, which allowed me make my trip to Austin. I still wasn’t well.

Initially I wanted surgery. Then, a story broke about 13-year-old Jahi McMath. The girl went to Oakland Children’s Hospital for a tonsillectomy and ended up brain dead. That scared the bejeezus out of me. I began researching natural ways to treat fibroids and started asking around for references to people who practice holistic medicine.

My step-grandmother came to the rescue and referred me to someone who specializes in acupuncture and Chinese herbs. I drink the herbs as a tea three times a day. They taste awful, like burnt coffee grounds and dirt.  The results outweigh the horrible taste. Within a week of taking the herbs my symptoms allayed. Frequent urination is gone. Most of my days are pain free.

Bottoms Up! This is the chinese herb tea
I drink 3 times a day. Looks good
doesn't it?

I wish I had tried acupuncture years ago because I love it.  It really relaxes me and gives me new energy. The combination of the herbs and acupuncture has made a difference in my life.

I also have to give a shout out and big thanks to Youtube vlogger DrKDollface. She shared her experience of treating fibroids with Chinese herbs and acupuncture in her videos. I learned a lot about the process from her experience. Her videos gave me a lot of hope. You never know how your actions can impact people.

From what I’ve read and been told, it’s not easy to treat fibroids naturally. Maybe I’m having luck because they’re small.  I’ve been on the herbs for about four months now. There ‘s been no shrinkage of the fibroids, but thankfully no growth either.  I pray that the herbs and acupuncture heal me. In the meantime, I’m happy my symptoms have drastically decreased.

Fibroids are very common and high among African-American women and Asian women. I believe I was in college when I attended a presentation by two black women who practiced non-western medicine. Something they said stuck with me. They said when women stress, it travels to our feminine parts like our breasts and wombs. And they said fibroids are common among Black women because many of us live stressful lives. We’re dealing with work, motherhood, relationships and poverty. Add to that racism and sexism. It makes sense how stress affects our health.

While helping my grandfather during his bout with cancer, I was hella stressed. In the back of my mind during that time, I hoped that it wouldn’t cause me to get sick or have fibroids. Maybe I developed fibroids from stress. Or maybe they grew because it’s hereditary. I’m extra committed to living stress-free as possible.

In addition to the Chinese herbs and acupuncture I’m also going to take up yoga. I just want to be fly and healthy.
